Special Chemicals
Specialty chemicals that have been tested through crystal
growth are available in three grades of purity. These materials are
a result of research at Scientific Materials Corporation aimed at
the production of high perfection crystals. These chemicals come from
sources throughout the world. Evaluation of purity is based on crystal
growth results. All chemicals are supplied with analysis as well as
material safety data sheets where applicable. |

Purity grades:
HP - Vendor nominal 4-9's
SP - Vendor nominal 5-9's
UP - Highest purity available via crystal growth tests |

|
|
Alumina
Available in SP grade and two forms; gamma alumina at a density of
0.5 g/cm3 and spheroidized alpha alumina at a density of 2.2 g/cm3.
The spheroidized material is actually small sapphire spheres several
microns in diameter. The size of the spheres varies significantly
both within lots and from lot to lot.
Undoped YAG
Available in SP and UP grades. SP grade is offered as "crackle"
(cracked crystal) or whole crystal weighing up to one kilogram. UP grade
is available in crackle, crystal, or optical grade crystal. Optical
grade crystals are grown by techniques similar to those used to
produce L.S. grade doped YAG. The resultant crystal has significantly
lower scatter and optical imperfections.
Rare earth oxides
Available in HP grade. These materials are selected for minimum
non-rare earth elements, with the major impurities being adjacent
rare earth ions. For example, in ytterbium oxide the major impurities
are lutetium and thulium. In erbium oxide the major impurities are
holmium and thulium. |
